I don’t know much about technology. I feel weak in almost every area. As a teacher I would hope to be able to incorporate technology into my classroom. I would like to teach younger children, kindergarten, and so I am not sure how much I would really use technology but I would like to stay up to date on what is happening in technology. As an educator it is important to attend semonars put on for teachers to help then learn new technology trends and how to best implement then into your classroom. Also there are multiple journals that serve teachers who whish to stay up to date with what is going on in technology. I would purchase one of these journals so I can stay up to date with what is happening. I really like the idea of taking tours online of historic places and museums along with interactive sites to help children learn. I would love to make those part of my classroom cirriculum.

evaluating the internet

The group that made this website is definantly biased against not only Martin Luther King Jr. but African Americans in gerneral. It sounds as if this is a white supremecy group. While it is important for students to learn that not all information on the internet is trustworthy this is not the correct site to show them. The violent and sensitive nature of this material along with the language makes this a very, very, very bad choice to show students that not all material online is trustworthy. This site is ranked as num. four when I looked it up on “google”. This website was ranked so high I believe because they have a .org in their URL which is supposed to make it more reliable imformation, obviously is not always the case. Kids can learn to be less trusting of the internet by looking at less harmful sites or creating their own, with the help of a teacher, that gives the wrong information.

Constructivism

I think that constructivism is controversial today because it focuses on students learning in a way on their own with the teacher not directing them as she used to but rather giving the studets a little more leniance to take the learning in their own direction. I think that it is important for teaching styles to be controversial in a sense because it forces people to disect what is being taught and how it is being taught. In a way it makes teachers more passionate and earger to perfect their teaching style. Now constructivism in itself I think is am important way to teach. While it may be difficult with young children, kindergarden or first grade because they do not have some of the necessary basic concepts with which to question and build from I do believe that come second grade and on it is an important teaching tool. Can it be used alone, no I think that there are some thinks that must simply be taught but for a majority of the information it is important to let the children work through the subject and material to formulate their own conclusions and then go from there. Technology and integrating it into your classroom may be important here because it is a way for the students to discover material and answers on their own. I believe that constructivism is and will remain a key componet in teaching.

For me this online class has been a new experience. I like the ability to do the work at my own pace and my own time. For me remembering to do the work can be difficult. Without going to class everyday I have to leave myself notes to remember to work online. I don’t know that I would change anything about the class, I have nothing to compare it to, but I think that this class works well online. It is easy to understand what must be done and when it must be done by. The only things that I prefer in the live classes is the participation, I like instant feed back and talking to people. It is not that it is harder to participate in the online classes I simply prefer talking face to face, I don’t like talking on the phone either. I would take an online class again but only if I needed to simply becuase I prefer the face to face. I think that almost any class could become an online class or parcial online class. This would be nice for studnets who have a hard time fitting classes and work into thier scheduals.

software

1. Word: this should be taught around fourth or fifth grade. The students at this time will be able to correctly use the keyboard. Also it is important for the students to maintain the abilities of writing (penmanship) and spelling that at times can be hindered if only computers are used. It is important for the students to be taught word for as they advance and are required to write more papers it is a useful tool and often required once the child enters high school, college, and the workplace.

2. Power point
3. Excel
4. Graphing programs
While these are important tools to learn on the computer they are not as essential as word is. They are all of equal importance and should be taught in the early to middle years in middle school, sixth or seventh grade. These applications will not be used much before then and will become more essential in high school, but it is important to know them before the students need to use them. They allow the students to create their own lectures, design spreadsheets and read them, also create accurate graphs.

5. Internet, google. This should be taught to students in the third or fourth grade. It is important for students to know how to quickly and efficiently find information online. This become more essential in middle, and high school and it will be a required skill once the students enter the work place or college.

tragedy

When tragedy like 9/11 or hurricane Katrina hit it is important not to ignore the incident. The children in your classroom will hear about this at home, on the bus, and on the street. Even if you ignore it in the classroom it will still affect the class. These events should be talked about and used to teach the children, about cultures, religous ideas, and the way others live. This is a time to use tragedy to teach the children in your classroom about others who may live in a completly diffrent way then they do. It is a time to teach tolerance and understanding. It is also important to informe the parents if you are dealing with a delicate subject and to remember the ages of those you are teacheing. While a child in highschool may be able to understand the government, the anger, and the loss of life associated with Katrina a child in first grade may not be able to comprehend all this and it is important not to display in appropriet pictures and subjects. To learn about how to use these moments to teach websites such as tolerance.org provide teachers with ideas and tools to teach your children about these subjects, and keeping up with what is going on so you are relaying the correct imformation is important.
